I believe secularism could hold peace for a longer period of time than a set religious state could, but that’s because it is a result of the modernisation of society whether it is in Saudi Arabia or Britain.
A prime example of a non-sectarian state crumbling because of religious influences is Egypt - mainly because the transaction from a dictated country into a supposed democracy was very rocky, if not questionable, and I think it was due to the transaction being carried during the time when the unrest was just beginning to die down; no one had time to appreciate nor experience a full and a well illustrated transition.
But a country like Saudi Arabia has somewhat managed to hold the essence of their religion - they need to because it holds the epitome of Islam - but like I said, the modernisation of current society as well as globalisation has played a significant part in Saudi’s influence whether it is in justice or politics. Reforming laws or implementing them has become difficult without them being criticised from left and right. If the prosecution of a criminal is done severely and they are handed a harsh sentence, they’ll always face backlash from other countries (assuming the main source of outcry is Western Countries) some would say Saudi has become soft in their old age curbing to criticism and not fully enforcing their ideals as a religious State.
That being said, without a strong leadership of the ruled country, a predominantly religious country will not hold and eventually face downfall.
I’ve heard people argue, that non-sectarian states will always be brutal or enforce discrimination and force people to partake in rituals that aren’t their own, but that just comes with the territory whether you like it or not, and I don’t mean that in a brutish manner but, what I’m saying is that a handful of people or a ship-full of people will not influence a state so integrated in their own ideas.
if in the near future, a country is established where there isn’t predominate religion amongst the larger population, then yes, maybe a sectarian is the best possible option.
